The beluga whale is a unique species of whale in that it is easily identifiable from very far away. There skin colour is of such great contrast to the water around them that they can be spotted quite easily in the wild.
Relative to other species of whales, the beluga is a smaller whale. Beluga's generally fall within a size range of 13 to 20 feet.
Their white colour makes them instantly recognizable, although young belugas are actually grey in colour. It isn't until they reach sexual maturity at about 5 years old that they turn white.
Other characteristics that can be noted visually are the prominent rounded forehead of the beluga and the absence of a dorsal fin.
Those familiar with belugas at their local aquariums will recognize belugas by their playful demeanour and the way they seem to smile wide!
